Grit becomes grinding paste, water finds its way past seals, and a small creak can be the first warning of a loose fitting, tired bearing or developing structural fault. Proper <strong>bike maintenance<\/strong> is not about keeping a machine cosmetically tidy. It is how you preserve safety, efficiency and the service life of equipment that may have cost a great deal to choose and set up correctly.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is not to strip the bike after every ride. It is to establish a sensible routine, recognise what needs professional attention and act before wear spreads from one replaceable part into several expensive ones.<\/p>\n<h2>Bike maintenance starts with the conditions you ride in<\/h2>\n<p>A fair-weather road bike used for two dry rides a week needs a different schedule from a gravel bike crossing muddy tracks, an e-bike carrying luggage through winter, or a mountain bike subjected to repeated wash-downs. Mileage matters, but contamination, load and riding style often matter more.<\/p>\n<p>Road spray attacks chains, cables, fasteners and bearings. Fine dust can work into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewhurstbikes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/bike-suspension-servicing-for-reliable-control-featured.webp\">suspension seals<\/a> and pivots. Salt accelerates corrosion, particularly around aluminium fittings, steel bolts and spoke nipples. An e-bike adds motor torque, greater system weight and, in many cases, higher rear-wheel and drivetrain loading. Treating every bicycle to the same monthly checklist is less useful than responding to its actual working environment.<\/p>\n<p>After a wet or dirty ride, rinse off loose contamination with low-pressure water. Do not direct a pressure washer at hubs, bottom brackets, headset bearings, suspension pivots, motor covers or seals. High pressure can force water and grit past protection designed to keep contaminants out, not withstand a jet wash.<\/p>\n<p>Use a suitable cleaner where needed, brush the cassette, chainrings and jockey wheels, then rinse gently and dry the bike. A clean rag around the chain will tell you more about its condition than spraying lubricant over black paste. Apply chain lubricant sparingly to the rollers, turn the cranks to distribute it, then wipe the outside of the chain. Excess oil attracts grit and creates the abrasive slurry you are trying to avoid.<\/p>\n<h2>The checks worth making before a ride<\/h2>\n<p>A two-minute pre-ride inspection catches many of the faults most likely to spoil a ride or compromise safety. Start with tyre pressure and condition. Look for embedded flints, cuts, bulges, exposed casing and sidewall damage. A tubeless tyre that has sealed several punctures may still be serviceable, but a cut casing or persistent loss of pressure deserves closer judgement.<\/p>\n<p>Check that both wheels are secure and spin freely. With rim brakes, make sure the quick-release mechanism is closed and the pads contact the braking surface rather than the tyre. With disc brakes, listen for rubbing, then squeeze each lever firmly. The lever should feel positive, not pull back to the handlebar or slowly sink under pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Lift the front wheel slightly and turn the handlebars. The steering should move freely without a notch at the straight-ahead position. Apply the front brake and rock the bike forwards and backwards. A knock can indicate headset play, although it can also come from a loose brake calliper, worn fork bushing or cable housing. Diagnosis matters. Simply tightening the first bolt you find can mask the issue or damage a component.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, shift through the gears under light load. Hesitant shifting can be as simple as a dry cable or dirty chain, but it may also signal a bent derailleur hanger, worn chain, damaged cassette tooth, loose axle or rear-mech pivot wear. Do not keep forcing a reluctant shift under power. A derailleur drawn into the rear wheel is a small fault turned into a costly failure.<\/p>\n<h2>Measure drivetrain wear rather than guessing<\/h2>\n<p>Chains do not literally stretch. Their pins, rollers and plates wear at their bearing surfaces, increasing pitch over the length of the chain. Once sufficiently worn, that chain no longer meshes cleanly with the cassette and chainrings. Continuing to ride it can accelerate wear across the whole transmission.<\/p>\n<p>A chain wear gauge is a useful workshop tool, but use one designed for modern narrow chains and follow its instructions. Check regularly, particularly on 11-, 12- and 13-speed systems where tolerances are tight. Replacing a chain at the right point is routine maintenance. Leaving it until it skips under load can mean replacing cassette, chainrings and perhaps jockey wheels as well.<\/p>\n<p>Listen as well as measure. A clean drivetrain should run with a consistent mechanical sound. Crunching, clicking that changes with pedal force, or a chain that climbs and slips on selected sprockets is evidence to investigate. Not every noise comes from the drivetrain: pedals, cleats, bottom brackets, seatposts and rear suspension pivots can all transmit sound through a frame.<\/p>\n<p>For endurance riding, touring and regular winter commuting, carrying a quick link appropriate to the chain is sensible. It will not repair a damaged derailleur or bent hanger, but it can turn a broken chain from a recovery job into a controlled roadside repair.<\/p>\n<h2>Bearings need protection, not endless adjustment<\/h2>\n<p>Headsets, hubs, bottom brackets and suspension pivots are often ignored because they are out of sight. Their condition has a direct effect on handling, efficiency and the longevity of adjacent parts. A bearing that feels rough, loose or indexed should not be dismissed as normal wear if the bike is otherwise well maintained.<\/p>\n<p>Check hubs by holding the frame or fork steady and moving the wheel laterally. Check the bottom bracket by holding both crank arms and feeling for movement. On a full-suspension bike, support the machine and gently load each pivot while watching and feeling for play. Some movement may be caused by shock hardware rather than pivot bearings, which is why a proper inspection separates observation from diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Over-tightening is a common mistake. Preload systems are designed to remove play without crushing bearings. Tightening an adjustment until the knock disappears can leave the assembly rough, overloaded and short-lived. Carbon components also require correct torque and suitable assembly compounds where specified. Guesswork with a long Allen key is not precision engineering.<\/p>\n<h2>Brakes, fasteners and wheels deserve deliberate attention<\/h2>\n<p>Brake pads are consumable safety components. On rim brakes, inspect pad wear indicators and remove any embedded metal fragments before they score the rim. On disc brakes, inspect pad thickness, contamination and uneven wear. A glazed or contaminated pad may squeal and perform poorly, but the cause could be fluid leakage, cleaning product, a misaligned calliper or repeated overheating on long descents.<\/p>\n<p>Do not assume a disc rotor is straight because the brake works. A lightly warped rotor can create intermittent rub and heat. Equally, a calliper that is repeatedly re-centred but still rubs may point to hub play, a bent mounting face, loose axle, damaged rotor or a piston that is not retracting correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Wheels warrant more than a squeeze of the spokes. Spin each wheel and watch the rim pass the brake pad or a fixed reference point. Look for lateral movement, vertical hop, cracked rims around spoke holes, loose or corroded nipples, damaged spokes and tension imbalance. A wheel can remain rideable while gradually losing tension, but riding it loose for months transfers load unevenly and can turn a straightforward true and tension service into a rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>Fasteners should be checked at sensible intervals, particularly stem bolts, handlebar clamps, saddle rails, crank bolts, brake callipers, racks and mudguards. Use a torque wrench where a torque value is specified. This is especially important for carbon handlebars, stems, seatposts and frames, where excessive clamp load can cause hidden damage.<\/p>\n<h2>When maintenance becomes engineering work<\/h2>\n<p>Some problems are not home-service jobs. Frame cracks, dents, corrosion around bonded joints, recurring wheel failures, damaged dropouts, stripped threads, seized components, electronic faults and suspension play with no obvious source all need proper assessment. A cracked weld is not simply a welding task. The question is why it cracked: fatigue loading, poor alignment, stress concentration, impact damage, unsuitable material condition or an overloaded attachment can all be involved.<\/p>\n<p>The same applies to repeated spoke breakages or a creak that returns after parts have been cleaned and tightened. Replacing the visibly failed item without finding the root cause can waste money and leave the underlying safety issue untouched.
